Girls of Paper & Fire | Book Review

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I absolutely love that this book turned a special yet ordinary girl into an empowered woman. The abuse and problematic behavior in this book is written in a way that does not condone the abuse. I loved the writing style, which was descriptive without being overly flowery. I listened to most of this on audiobook, and the narrator did an excellent job. I wish the F/F relationship had been drawn out more and not so insta-lovey. However, I definitely recommend!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone | Book Review

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description from the author

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers--beautiful, haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

My Review

Daughter of Smoke and Bone was lovely and mysterious. The writing was accessible, and the world is classic Laini Taylor: full of imagination, mystery, and so, so splendid. I am glad that I went into this not knowing a thing about the plot because it allowed me to discover it as I read. The beginning was a bit confusing, but be patient because it all gets explained in time.

...and THAT ENDING! I am so glad I don't have to wait for the next book!

Crown of Midnight | Book Review!

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description from the Author

“A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.
It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend.”

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Bold, daring, and lethal, assassin Celaena Sardothien won the brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then, an unspeakable tragedy shatters Celaena’s world. She must decide once and for all where her loyalties lie . . . and whom she will fight for.

My Review
Page Count: 418
Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: Throne of Glass, Book 2
CW: violence, sensual scenes, mild profanity

HOLY CRAP THIS WAS SO GOOD! I enjoyed this more than the first book, Throne of Glass. The beginning of the book started off a bit slow for my taste, but it picked up quickly. There is a lot more action and character development in this novel. The plot really progressed as Celaena's story unfolds.

I wasn't a huge fan of Dorian in Throne of Glass, but he grew a lot in Crown of Midnight. I love the friendship that has developed between him and Celaena, and I look forward to seeing how it grows in the following books.

I LOVED Chaol in this installment! He was genuine and really grew as a character. I loved seeing his internal thoughts and what drives him.

Celaena grew as well, but not as much as I would have liked. However, she is dealing with a lot of heavy stuff in this book, so I understand why it is taking her longer. She has suffered through some horrible events in her life, and they are beginning to be revealed in Crown of Midnight. Celaena did get on my nerves at times because she is stubborn and strong-willed, wanting to protect the people she loves. I understand her motivations, but it was frustrating to watch.

The death in this book broke my heart, and the ending was a HUGE info bomb. I had to get my hands on Heir of Fire immediately after finishing Crown of Midnight. I plan on filming a more in depth review of this video for my BookTube channel.

Shadow and Bone - Book Review

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Enter the Grishaverse with Book One of the Shadow and Bone Trilogy by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom.

Now Alina will enter a lavish world of royalty and intrigue as she trains with the Grisha, her country’s magical military elite—and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling. As the threat to the kingdom mounts and Alina unlocks the secrets of her past, she will make a dangerous discovery that could threaten all she loves and the very future of a nation.

Welcome to Ravka . . . a world of science and superstition where nothing is what it seems.

My Review
Page Count: 356 pgs./9 hrs., 21 mins.
Narrator: Lauren Fortgang
Series: The Grisha Trilogy/GrishaVerse, Book 1

Leigh Bardugo's writing is amazing. I began this book because it was released before Six of Crows, so I wanted to read the trilogy before diving into that book. I was not disappointed. The plot in this story was so captivating that I finished the book in less than two days.

The character that solidified my interest in Shadow and Bone is The Darkling and his side smirks. Alina wasn't a favorite until she grew more confidence. The character development in this book is outstanding. They are grey characters, flawed but smart. Alina is relatable because she gets thrust into a strange world that some only dream of entering and is forced to work on learning to control her magic. Her backstory is strong, and she tries to do the right thing when it comes to hard decisions.

The world building in this novel is fantastic. It is offputting at first because readers are thrown in with no explanation, but as the novel progresses, it makes more sense. I also LOVE that it is Russian inspired; I am a huge fan of Russian literature.

Overall, the plot is fantastic, the characters capture your heart, and the magic is outstanding. I am diving right into Siege and Storm!

It doesn’t matter what the prize for the Sun City Originals contest is this year.

Not Dia, that’s for sure. Because Dia knows that without a band, she hasn’t got a shot at winning Sun City. Because ever since Hanna’s drinking took over her life, Dia and Jules haven’t been in it. And ever since Hanna left—well, there hasn’t been a band.

It used to be the three of them, Dia, Jules, and Hanna, messing around and making music and planning for the future. No contest can change that. Right?

But like the lyrics of a song you used to play on repeat, there’s no forgetting a best friend. And for Dia, Jules, and Hanna, this impossible challenge—to ignore the past, in order to jumpstart the future—will only become possible if they finally make peace with the girls they once were, and the girls they are finally letting themselves be.

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SANDCASTLE EMPIRE COMES A SCI-FI THRILLER THAT'S EQUAL PARTS ILLUMINAE AND ONE OF US IS LYING.

Lindley Hamilton has been the leader of the space station Lusca since every first-generation crew member on board—including her mother, the commander—was killed by a deadly virus.

Lindley always assumed she'd captain the Lusca one day, but she never thought that day would come so soon. And she never thought it would be like this—struggling to survive every day, learning how to keep the Lusca running, figuring out how to communicate with Earth, making sure they don't run out of food.

When a member of the surviving second generation dies from symptoms that look just like the deadly virus, though, Lindley feels her world shrinking even smaller. The disease was supposed to be over; the second generation was supposed to be immune. But as more people die, Lindley must face the terrifying reality that either the virus has mutated or something worse is happening: one of their own is a killer.

In 1955, eighteen-year-old Janet Jones keeps the love she shares with her best friend Marie a secret. It’s not easy being gay in Washington, D.C. in the age of McCarthyism, but when she discovers a series of books about women falling in love with other women, it awakens something in Janet. As she juggles a romance she must keep hidden and a newfound ambition to write and publish her own story, she risks exposing herself―and Marie―to a danger all too real.

62 years later, Abby Zimet can’t stop thinking about her senior project and its subject―classic 1950s lesbian pulp fiction. Between the pages of her favorite book, the stresses of Abby’s own life are lost to the fictional hopes, desires, and tragedies of the characters she’s reading about. She feels especially connected to one author, a woman who wrote under the pseudonym “Marian Love,” and becomes determined to track her down and discover her true identity.

Told in dual narratives, New York Times bestselling author Robin Talley weaves together the lives of two young women connected across generations through the power of words. A stunning story of bravery, love, how far we’ve come, and how much farther we have to go.

For fans of Andrew Smith and Frank Portman and the movies Election and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off comes a hilarious and satirical novel about the highs and (very low) lows of the electoral process, proving that the popular vote is the one that matters most.

Stacey Wynn was the clear front-runner for Lincoln High student council president. But then French-Canadian transfer student Julia Romero entered the race…and put the moves on Stacey’s best friend/campaign adviser, Brian.

Stacey also didn’t count on Tony Guo, resident stoner, whose sole focus is on removing the school’s ban of his favorite chocolate milk, becoming the voice of the little guy, thanks to a freshman political “mastermind” with a blue Mohawk.

Three candidates, three platforms, and a whirlwind of social media, gaffes, high school drama, and protests make for a ridiculously hilarious political circus that just may hold some poignant truth somewhere in the mix.

November 16th

J.K. Rowling’s five-film Fantastic Beasts adventure series continues with the original screenplay for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
At the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured in New York with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escapes custody and sets about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists Newt, his former Hogwarts student, who agrees to help once again, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
This second original screenplay from J.K. Rowling, illustrated with stunning line art from MinaLima, expands on earlier events that helped shape the wizarding world, with some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of both the books and films.

November 27th

Sabaa Tahir is an amazing author. She illustrates a love for her characters in the way she writes them, and the world she has created is raw, brutal, and dark. From the very beginning, this story drew me in, and I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. Laia and Elias are flawed but lovable characters, and they both grow exponentially throughout the book. The Commandant is extremely cruel, but very believable.

This is a story that broke my heart in parts and made my heart soar in others, and it will stay with me for a long time. I cannot wait to start the second book, A Torch Against the Night, because, man, that cliffhanger!

Other Books in the An Ember in the Ashes Series

Set in a rich, high-fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome, Sabaa Tahir’s AN EMBER IN THE ASHES told the story of Laia, a slave fighting for her family, and Elias, a young soldier fighting for his freedom.

Now, in A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT, Elias and Laia are running for their lives.

After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

The highly anticipated third book in #1 New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir’s EMBER QUARTET.

Beyond the Martial Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger.

Helene Aquilla, the Blood Shrike, is desperate to protect her sister’s life and the lives of everyone in the Empire. But she knows that danger lurks on all sides: Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable and violent, while Keris Veturia, the ruthless Commandant, capitalizes on the Emperor’s volatility to grow her own power–regardless of the carnage she leaves in her path.

Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But in the hunt to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would help her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight.

And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that demands his complete surrender–even if that means abandoning the woman he loves.

Ace of Shades

Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description from the Publisher

Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets…and secrets hide in every shadow

Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, Enne has only one lead: the name Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and con man. Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless Mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi’s enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…

And she’ll need to play.

My Review

Page Count: 411 pgs; 12.2 hours
Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: The Shadow Game
CW: Violence, Pedophilia (viewed as abhorrent in the story)

I read most of this book by listening to the audio book. The narrator is Saskia Maarleveld. I found the narrator to be very enjoyable to listen to, and it was easy to differentiate the characters.

Amanda Foody's writing style is very descriptive and easy to follow. She made the city of New Reynes come alive because the history and atmosphere are so rich. She also includes excellent context clues for idioms and phrases from New Reynes, so it is easy to figure out what the characters mean. The world building in this novel is excellent.

The magic system in this book is unique. Each person is gifted with two talents based on their family names (one from each parent). The talents are varied, from dancing to aura reading to counting/arithmetic. It was interesting to learn about which talents are associated with which family as well as how the family are cast in the class system.

The character development in this novel is excellent. The characters are very realistic with very human flaws. Enne, the protagonist, grows a lot as a character throughout the novel. Levi is not the typical "bad boy," but he does toe the moral line at times. I love that Amanda Foody wrote Levi as a man that can be manly but also fragile and sensitive. Vianca was also an interesting character. As the dom of a crime family, I expected her to be completely ruthless and cliche, but she was more subtle with her ruthless role, especially combined with her talent.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. Some facts of the story could have been a bit more fleshed out, but this was a very minor issue for me because I loved the story so much. It ended on a wonderful cliffhanger, and I cannot wait to read the next book, King of Fools!

I was really excited about this book, so I am sad to say that this book fell a little flat for me. I started this book, got about halfway through, then put it down. I picked it back up again about a month later. The story started out well, and I was invested. However, once Scarlett got to Caraval, the story began to slow down.

The characters were just OK. I was into the story at some points, but not others. The main romance didn't have enough chemistry. I wanted them to end up together, but after a certain plot twist and the ending, I could have gone either way. There was a potential for a love triangle that wasn't fleshed out but was hinted at, and then the third character ended up liking someone else. The father was very extreme and over the top with his behavior, which didn't match the rest of the character development. The sister, Tella, got on my nerves and came across as immature and naive.

The magic system was also OK. There wasn't much explanation as to how the magic actually worked, and the limitations weren't clear. I think I would have been more invested in the story if the magic system had been more developed because I do think that the idea of Caraval is an interesting one.

I will probably continue with the series, mostly because I already purchased the second book, Legendary. I hope Tella is not the focus of the second book. I would really like to see Scarlett's story fleshed out and developed. Overall, I found this to be an average book for a YA audience. I enjoyed some parts of the story, but this will most likely not be a re-read for me in the future.

The Raven King

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description from the Publisher
The fourth and final installment in the spellbinding series from the irrepressible, #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater.

The quest for the Welsh king Glendower is completed, but kings aren't always what they're cracked up to be. Gansey and his friends are now desperate to change what they have come to believe is his fate-to die before the end of the year. They also have to cope with the villainous forces of greed and corruption who descend on their town, RoboBees, and a power-hungry demon. And there's that nagging curse that Blue will kiss her true love and he will die, and she's increasingly certain that Gansey is her heart's desire.

Strange revelations about Blue's father and the introduction of a new student, who proves to be a stalwart and trustworthy ally, all help to build to the breathtaking climax. Beyond the imaginative storytelling, the colorful cast of characters, and the looping subplots, Stiefvater has tackled big questions about life and death, power and personal responsibility, dreams and promises, and fate and destiny.

"The head is too wise. The heart is all fire.”

I was kind of underwhelmed by the first book in this series, The Raven Boys, but I am really glad that I kept reading. I honestly think that the first book was more of an introduction to set up the plot and the MANY twists and turns to come.

Maggie Stiefvater's writing is poetic, subtle, and takes some getting used to, and before you know it you are completely attached to the protagonists. The romance build up was perfect, and it wasn't the main focus of the plot, which I appreciated. The Raven Boys really do capture your heart. It reminds me of the quote from The Fault In Our Stars, "I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once." At first I wasn't sure if I would like them, but once I started reading The Dream Thieves, I began to love them. By the time I got to The Raven King, I was hopelessly invested in the story! I love that it is about friendship and magic.

“He was a book, and he was holding his final pages, and he wanted to get to the end to find out how it went, and he didn't want it to be over.”

“What a strange constellation they all were.”

**SPOILERS**
I was SO ecstatic about Ronan and Adam. I wasn't expecting it, but when it happened, it just made sense.

“His feelings for Adam were an oil spill; he'd let them overflow and now there wasn't a damn place in the ocean that wouldn't catch fire if he dropped a match.”

“When Adam kissed him, it was every mile per hour Ronan had ever gone over the speed limit. It was every window-down, goose-bumps-on-skin, teeth-chattering-cold night drive. It was Adam’s ribs under Ronan’s hands and Adam’s mouth on his mouth, again and again and again. It was stubble on his lips and Ronan having to stop, to get his breath, to restart his heart. They were both hungry animals, but Adam had been starving for far longer.”

I also loved that each character had a role, but they weren't obvious from the beginning: Gansey, the King, Blue, the Mirror Tree, Adam, the Magician, Noah, the Ghost, Henry, the Special One, and Ronan, The Greywaren.

My Review
Page Count: 424
Genre: YA Fiction, Fantasy
Series: The Mortal Instruments #4

That ending! Once again, Cassandra Clare destroyed me.

The Good:

  • Characters. I enjoyed watching the characters' relationships with each other grow. I also enjoyed reading more of Simon's story, which made me like him even more.
  • I really enjoyed reading about the cult in this book. Religions have always fascinated me, and even though this contained a fictional cult, there were religious references in here. It took me back to my English classes!
  • The ties to the Infernal Devices series. While you don't have to read the books before this, there are a few references that you probably won't get if you haven't read them. (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, and Clockwork Princess).
  • There are some excellent plot twists in this book.

The Not-So-Good:

  • The story line did get a little weird for me at times, but overall it was really good.
  • Without giving away spoilers, I'll just say that Jace and Clary's relationship gets very frustrating in this book. I was irritated with Jace through most of this book until I realized why he is behaving in a certain way.
  • The book started a little slow for me. There wasn't much action until after the first 100 pages.
  • The plot fell a little short compared to the epic ending in City of Glass. I realize that I need to look at this as a separate trilogy. I think it will help my expectations.
