You | Book Review!

You by Caroline Kepnes

⭐⭐⭐⭐

 Description from the Publisher

“[A] beautifully crafted thriller that will give you chills.” (People magazine)

From debut author Caroline Kepnes comes You, one of Suspense Magazine’s Best Books of 2014, and a brilliant and terrifying novel for the social media age.

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that’s being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King’s Misery.

My Review
Page Count: 424 pgs./11 hrs.
Narrator: Santino Fontana
Genre: Thriller
Series: You, Book 1
CW: violence, murder, graphic language, stalking, drug abuse, sexual scenes

This book was an insane ride! Holy cow! This was an excellent novel, and the plot was very well done. Kepnes writes in a way that makes the narrator, Joe Goldberg, somewhat relatable and compels the reader to sympathize with him...at least until the reader remembers all of the awful actions Joe has done. It is tremendously thought-provoking as well as entertaining.

I listened to this audiobook through Scribd, and I highly recommend it. Listening to Joe's voice as he stalks Beck gives the reader a very visceral experience, and exacerbates the thrill. The pacing was well done, and the narrator gave me chills throughout the novel.

Kepnes did an outstanding job of capturing Joe's psyche and stalking behaviors. Writing the novel from his perspective was a very good choice and really added to the story. It was creepy, engaging, and very disturbing.

The only thing that kept me from giving You five stars is that I did find the story a bit predictable. However, this did not detract from my reading experience. I HIGHLY recommend listening to this on audiobook!

Little White Lies | Book Review!

Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

⭐⭐⭐

Description from the Author

"I'm not saying this is Sawyer's fault," the prim and proper one said delicately. "But."

Eighteen-year-old auto mechanic Sawyer Taft did not expect her estranged grandmother to show up at her apartment door and offer her a six-figure contract to participate in debutante season. And she definitely never imagined she would accept. But when she realizes that immersing herself in her grandmother's "society" might mean discovering the answer to the biggest mystery of her life - her father's identity - she signs on the dotted line and braces herself for a year of makeovers, big dresses, bigger egos, and a whole lot of bless your heart. The one thing she doesn't expect to find is friendship, but as she's drawn into a group of debutantes with scandalous, dangerous secrets of their own, Sawyer quickly discovers that her family isn't the only mainstay of high society with skeletons in their closet. There are people in her grandmother's glittering world who are not what they appear, and no one wants Sawyer poking her nose into the past. As she navigates the twisted relationships between her new friends and their powerful parents, Sawyer's search for the truth about her own origins is just the beginning.

Set in the world of debutante balls, grand estates and rolling green hills, Little White Lies combines a charming setting, a classic fish-out-of-water story, and the sort of layered mystery only author Jennifer Lynn Barnes can pull off.

My Review
Page Count:400 pgs./9 hrs.,54 mins.
Narrator: Katherine Littrell
Genre: YA Contemporary, YA Mystery
Series: Debutantes, Book 1

My thoughts are still kind of all over the place about this book. I really had fun with most of the book, but I agree with other reviews that this book should have been about 100 pages shorter. The story jumps between the present and the nine months leading up to the debutante ball. I definitely got a Gilmore Girls vibe from the relationships between Sawyer, her mom, and her grandmother. This is a contemporary story laced with a mystery surrounding the identity of Sawyer's father.

The first half of the book was really funny, and I enjoyed reading about the Southern wealthy lifestyle. The second half was a little frustrating. A large chunk of the latter half of the book was a lot of characters running around trying to figure things out and building up to a big "event/plot twist," which ended up being very disappointing to me. The plot twist at the very end was something that I could have done without because it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the story or the characters.

Overall the scandals were really tame (except for one), which made the buildup disappointing. While this was a fun read for the most part, I found this book to be just OK.

Ashley and Dash reluctantly decide to share the car, but neither anticipates the wild ride ahead.

At first they drive in silence, but, forced into close quarters, Ashley and Dash can't help but open up. Not only do they find they have a lot in common, but there's even a spark of romance in the air. Their feelings catch them off guard - never before has either been so excited about a first meeting. But the two are in for more twists and turns along the way as they rescue a lost puppy, run into petty thieves, and even get caught up in a case of mistaken identity. 3. Read a book with a character that is considered an outcast.
Song: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Set in a rich, high-fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome, Sabaa Tahir’s AN EMBER IN THE ASHES told the story of Laia, a slave fighting for her family, and Elias, a young soldier fighting for his freedom.

Now, in A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT, Elias and Laia are running for their lives.

After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

4. Read a book that takes place during the winter time or with snow.
Song: Winter Wonderland
Challenge Name: Snowed In

Debbie Macomber brings us to the Alaskan wilderness for a magical Christmas tale about finding love where it's least expected.

Before beginning her dream job as sous chef in one of Seattle's hottest new restaurants, Josie Avery takes a summer position cooking at a lakeside lodge in the remote Alaskan town of Ponder. Josie falls for the rustic charms of the local community - including Jack Corcoran, the crotchety keeper of Ponder's famed sourdough starter, and, in particular, the quiet and intense Palmer Saxon, a famed master swordsmith.

Josie and Palmer become close during the long Alaskan summer days, but Josie knows that come fall, she'll be returning to reality and the career she's worked so hard for. Palmer, on the other hand, would like nothing better than to make Josie his wife and to keep her in Ponder. But Josie can't imagine abandoning her mother back in the Emerald City and sacrificing her career to stay in this isolated town - not even for a man she's quickly coming to love.

Fate has other plans. Josie misses the last boat out of town before winter sets in, stranding her in Ponder and putting her dream job at risk. As the holidays approach, Josie and Palmer must grapple with the complications that arise when dreams confront reality and the Christmas magic that can happen when they put their faith in love.

Debbie Macomber is at her best in this beautiful holiday story about the far journeys we travel to find a place to call home.

First published on December 19, 1843, A Christmas Carol was an instant classic: Londoners thronged to hear Dickens read it in person and bought out the first printing in days. Its reception was so ecstatic that it is credited with helping to revive interest among the Victorians in Christmas traditions, including caroling and holiday cards, as well as inciting an unexpected wave of charitable giving from Britain’s Industrial Age robber barons. Originally conceived as a pamphlet against exploitative capitalism before taking its current form, it has inspired dozens of theatrical and movie adaptions, and its characters, from Scrooge to Tiny Tim, are forever inscribed in our hearts and minds.

My Review
Page Count: 192 pgs.
Genre: Manga, Fantasy
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist, Book 1

This was my first time reading manga, and I really enjoyed it. The artwork is awesome, and I enjoyed the little witty side comments from the characters. I was hesitant starting this book, but I was quickly captivated by the plot and the characters. It was easy to follow and not hard at all to get the hang of reading from right to left.

Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric attempt an alchemical ritual as a way to bring their mother back from the dead. The attempt fails, and as a result, Edward loses a limb and Alphonse is left as a soul inhabiting a suit of armor. The brothers begin a journey to try to fix their mistake and put their bodies back together, getting caught up in adventure along the way.

The action scenes are fun and over-the-top, making this an enjoyable read. My one critique is that I would have liked more of an explanation of the world and how alchemy works before diving right into the action.
